Bridge began their defence of the Hulme Cup in onerous fashion with too many players putting in mediocre performances. They had got off to a good start when Tom Smith smashed a Tom Ekin cross into the roof on the net and on 33minutes Malzeard keeper Mark Green made a total hash of a Tony Lavery cross to give Bridge a comfortable half time. The second half looked like a case of fait accompli as Bridge seemed content to allow the game to drift to its conclusion. Kirkby, to their credit, never gave up trying and five minutes from time Stuart Clark reduced the arrears as Bridge failed to deal with a free kick. Twitchiness now replaced complacency with Bridge managing to see out the remaining few minutes
