BOROUGHBRIDGE RES 7, SPA ATHLETIC RES 0.

Spa started the better of the two sides and threatened on a couple of occasions with Johnny Hewison going close but that was as good as it got for them when on12 minutes a superb Tom Smith cross was knocked back by Phil Wix and Marcus Philpott scrambled in the opener. Before the visitors had time to recover from this setback Paul Smith cut in from the right to beat keeper Steve James at his near post. Tom Smith and Wix were causing Spa all sorts of problems out on the flanks and it was Wix who drifted by two defenders to set up Philpott for his second on 27 minutes. Philpott could have gone into the break with a hat trick but James saved his spot kick after Smith (P) had been brought down. It was very much déjà vu in the second half with Tom Smith opening his account with a fierce drive from a narrow angle on 49 minutes and three minutes later he doubled his tally with a delicate chip from an astute P Smith free kick. Although Philpott and P Smith were unlucky to have goals disallowed the home side continued to dominate only to lose their way in the final third with the wrong option until Philpott duly completed his hat trick on 80 minutes with a superb 22 yard strike. The returning Johnny Hunt rounded things off in injury time with a simple tap-in after James had blocked Tommy Ekin's initial effort. Credit must go to Spa, who despite the comprehensive nature of the defeat, never gave up on their football principles and made Bridge work hard to maintain a clean sheet.
