Boroughbridge AFC 'A' Match Reports 08/09
January to May
03/01/09 - Leeds City Res 2-0 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
Dancing on Ice would have been more appropriate as Bridge went down in this top v bottom clash. They gave their opponents an early scare when Phil Wix hit the bar with Joe Royce well beaten but once Danny Brown gave them the lead on 16 minutes it was the home side that took the initiative. Midfielder Dominic Broadley was the driving force for City and he added a second ten minutes later as another embarrassing scoreline looked on the horizon. Bridge dug in to half time and after the interval they worked diligently as a unit forcing Royce into action on a couple of occasions but they also had to thank James Cooper for keeping them in the contest with three excellent saves. Bridge’s best chance to rescue something from the game came in the 80th minute when a partial save from Royce supported by a goal line clearance from Neil Suggitt denied Wix leaving his side firmly rooted at the bottom of the table.
Man of Match - James Cooper
17/01/09 - Spa Athletic 0-1 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
A battling performance from Bridge’s ‘A’ team against a strengthened Spa side gave them three valuable points in their struggle against the drop. In spite of Spa winning the two previous encounters Bridge were not deterred in a competitive first half of some good opportunities for both sides. The second half started in similar fashion but with keepers James Cooper and John Hebden in fine form supported by some resolute defending it was difficult to see where a goal would come from. This was until the 61st minute when Wayne Fisher took an in swinging corner which deceived everyone and looked to be on its way into the net before a final touch was claimed by Player Manager Chris Chapman. There was some doubt as to the validity of Chapman’s claim and despite referral to the dubious goals panel and a few beers the matter remains unresolved. Back to the game which saw Spa exert more pressure only to find Bridge equally determined to repel and despite some anxious moments they were able to see the game through. A team performance was validated by the Man of the Match award where several players got a vote/votes before Tom Hussell, in his first year in Senior Football, came out on top with four.
Man of Match - Tom Hussell
24/01/09 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 0-4 Harlow Hill Res - League
Bridge took to the field with their ‘lucky omen’ Craig Kitching, who was playing when Bridge recorded their first victory of the season, but on this occasion a little more than luck was needed as they went down to a disappointing defeat. The first half was an evenly balanced affair as both sides created good opportunities but it was the visitors who took the lead a minute before the break when Dave Jones capitalises on a lapse of concentration to steer a long punt up field past James Cooper. Bridge were now left to defend the worst end of the pitch which was becoming increasingly heavy and muddy and they found themselves out manoeuvred by a more powerful, physically stronger Harlow side. It was no surprise when Harlow added their second through Danny Currie on 58 minutes and as Bridge tired Harlow took full advantage with a brace from Danny Waters. This was a below par performance from the home side and they will certainly have to dig deep in the remaining games to avoid relegation.
Man of Match - James Cooper & Dave Burniston
21/02/09 - Burley Trojans Res 3-0 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
Without a game for three weeks Bridge’s day did not get off to a good start with several late backwords and no access to a change of strip leaving them with no time to prepare for this bottom of the table clash. Their situation was exacerbated by a bumpy pitch and a very stiff wind which was compounded further by conceding two goals in the opening six minutes. They did improve after this and it was not until the 90th minute that Guy Smith headed in the third from a corner. Burley’s other scorers were Danny Bryan and Will Knox.
28/02/09 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 1-3 Burley Trojans Res - League
Back to back victories eased the visitors’ relegations worries but it left the home side with very little chance of avoiding the drop. Bridge were already without player Manager Chris Chapman for this important encounter and were dealt another blow when they lost Mark Burniston to the Reserve team just before kick off. Nevertheless they started confidently enough and were unlucky to have a Johnny Brear goal disallowed for offside in the 27th minute. Burley’s best chance had been comfortably saved by James Cooper and with half time approaching Bridge’s well organised defence was breached twice in the space of three minutes. On 42 minutes they got themselves in a tangle which allowed Simon Walker to strike home the opener and they had barely settled down from this setback before Gary Shankland added a second. A Paul Scaife strike five minutes after the break eased their frustration only for ‘Coops or maybe ‘oops’ to drop a howler three minutes later from an innocuous looking high lob from Chris Wheeler. Despite their precarious position in the league Bridge did not let their heads drop and opportunities for Steve Warburton and Craig Kitching both flashed over the bar with keeper Chris Hargreaves well beaten.
Man of Match - Craig Tetley
07/03/09 - Sherwood Res 2-0 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
Bridge’s hope of surviving the drop is disappearing quickly and their cause was not helped by the loss of their Player Manager Chris Chapman to Reserve team duty. Kevin Hoare took on the task for the second week running and despite his rallying cry it was Sherwood who were in the ascendancy from the start but it took them 26 minutes to unlock the Bridge defence with a strike from Ben Lofthouse. The home side continued to dominate and it was not until the 40th minute that Bridge managed a shot on target. Although they did improve after the break a second goal on the hour from James Hayter ended Bridge’s hopes of getting anything out of the game.
Man of Match - Tom Barker
14/03/09 - Pannal Sports Res 2-0 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
In their present position Bridge could easily have capitulated after going two down to goals from Richard Lamb in the opening 20 minutes but they steadied the ship to give a good account of themselves for the remainder of the game.
21/03/09 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 4-1 Pannal Sports Res - League
For the opening forty five minutes Bridge looked anything but a bottom of the table side but once they went behind in the 59 minute they never looked likely to recover the deficit. The game started with James Cooper pushing over a Tom Carr and Johnny Brear missing an excellent opportunity to head home a Lewis Barlow cross. Craig Tetley then went on a mazy run but failed to pull the trigger, Richard Lamb shot wide for Pannal, Ross Mardon twice missed out on good opportunities before Chris Chapman converted a Barlow cross three minutes before the break. Consolidation was the key for Bridge but within a minute of the resumption Tom Bartle put the sides level and a Tommy Hussell mistake on the hour mark allowed Lamb to put the visitors in front. Despite the home side’s best efforts Stuart Proctor in the home goal was rarely troubled and in the 76 minute, Es Goodhall who was the architect of most of Pannal’s good work set up Bartle for number three. Goodhall then set up another good chance which was scrambled away by Cooper before the same player drifted by three Bridge defenders prior to rifling the ball into the bottom corner.
Man of Match - Craig Tetley
25/04/09 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 8-1 Leeds City Res - League
When top meets bottom the outcome is usually predictable and this result was never in doubt from the moment Jack Tate opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Further goals from Andrew Dimbleby, a Joe Royle penalty and a brace from Craig Connolly gave the visitors a comfortable half time lead which was added to with second half goals from Hussein James (2) and a Chris Tinson penalty. Chris Chapman scored for Bridge in the 32nd minute.
