Boroughbridge AFC Sunday Reserves Match Reports 08/09
31/08/08 - Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res 2-2 Leeds City Adelers - League
Tommy Ekin, Bridge's newest and youngest recruit to management, can certainly be proud of his team's performance as they came back from a 2-0 deficit to overcome a more experienced and efficient Adelers side. Their movement and interchange of passing had Bridge chasing shadows from the off and even though their first goal, accredited to Chris Chapman, had an element of luck it was no more than they deserved. A second goal on 52 minutes from James Hopkins looked to have sealed the victory until Ross Hamilton clinically dispatched a through ball from Wayne Fisher to give Bridge some hope on 65minutes. Still Adelers looked in control of the situation and it was not until the 82 minutes that Bridge got on terms when Hamilton confidently beat Tony Cooper from the penalty spot which resulted from a petulant reaction from an Adeler's defender.
Man of Match - Chris Chapman
28/09/08 - Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res 0-3 FC Boston Res - League
After a creditable first half performance in which they more than matched their opponents Bridge gave away a goal within twenty seconds of the restart as Sam Wild robbed Rob Aspinall to go through and score. This was a major setback but they nearly got back on terms as Chris Chapman headed an Aspinall free kick into the path of Lewis Barlow who hit a tremendous volley that shaved the bar with Danny Jacklyn well beaten. Just past the hour mark, with the home defence all at sea, Nick Jacklyn added a second with Sam Wild adding a third as the visitors ran out comfortable winners.
Man of Match - Rob Aspinall
05/10/08 - Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res 0-3 Killinghall Nomads - League
This was almost a carbon copy of Bridge's game the previous week when they matched their more illustrious opponents for the first forty-five minutes before going behind in the early part of the second half and then losing by the same margin. Bridge's best chance of the first half fell to Paul Scaife whereas Nomads had several good opportunities only to find Bridge's young keeper Josh Donnelly in outstanding form. On 49 minutes Ben King , after some near misses, eventually put his side in front and two goals in the last ten minutes through King and Michael Hewson confirmed their superiority.
Man of Match - Josh Donnelly
12/10/08 - Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res 0-6 Hampsthwaite United - League
Bridge fell behind to an early goal from Adam Read and just when they seemed to be getting some momentum to their game Sam Pocock, who Bridge were convinced was yards offside, was allowed to add their second. Paul Moses added a third before the break and even though Bridge did not let their heads drop Hampsthwaite proved their superiority in the second half as Pocock and Moses added to their tally with Mike Bint completing the scorers.
Man of Match - Andy Stephenson
19/10/08 - Atlanta 8-4 Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res - League
18 year old Alex Benson made an immediate impression on his debut by setting up Chris Chapman for the opener on 18 minutes and then scoring a second himself three minutes later. Unfortunately for Bridge this was about as good as it got with defensive frailties again letting the side down. Benson did add his second on 31 minutes and Rob Aspinall scored Bridge's fourth 13 minutes from time but by then the game was well out of their reach.
Man of Match - Alex Benson
26/10/08 - Kirk Deighton Rangers 6-0 Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res - League
Life in Division 2 is proving to be a tough baptism for some of Bridge's young players who have now conceded twenty goals in their last three outings. Deighton also had a raft of young players in their side but were able to field the experienced Dean Buckle in the heart of their defence and in midfielder Tom Dickinson had the best player on the park Bridge's best chance fell to Wayne Fisher when they went 2-0 down through goals from Sam Jackson and Ed Kershaw with Dickinson adding a third before half time. After the break Deighton confirmed their superiority as Kershaw and Jackson added to their tally and Michael Denham completed the scoring in the latter stages of the game.
Man of Match - Chris Chapman, Liam Bannard & Craig Kitching
21/12/08 - Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res 4-3 Black Swan Barwick - League
Losing can become a habit and after taking a four goal lead in the opening 29 minutes Bridge should have been home and hosed but it was all hands to the pump in the last few minutes after Black Swan scored their third. Bridge took the lead after only four minutes when Paul Scaife floated in a free kick for Mark Burniston to head home and it got better eight minutes later as Matt Prior miskicked a long clearance to leave Scaife with an easy tap-in. Wayne Fisher then latched on to a long ball from Chris Chapman to smash his shot into Prior’s top corner with his standing foot and on 29minutes he added his second with a delicate chip from the overused left peg. Both sides were bemused by this opening burst and a bit of reality returned to the fixture when Simon Maltby headed home two minutes later. Bridge held their three goal advantage until half time but after the break the impressive Stuart Berry began to impose his presence on the game and on 64 minutes the pressure paid off with a Dave Hudson header from a Steve Rostron corner. It was now backs to the wall time for the home side and it was a mixture of stalwart defending and some poor finishing from Swan that allowed them to survive until three minutes from time when Gareth Bell added their third. Bridge managed to ride out the last few minutes without any further trauma to give them their second win of the season.
Man of Match - Wayne Fisher
11/01/09 - Killinghall Nomads 5-2 Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res - Intermediate Cup
With their Saturday fixtures cancelled following the cold snap and the Claro League fixture at Coach & Horses postponed due to an administrative error Bridge Reserves could only muster 12 players for the Intermediate Cup as a consequence of the anomalous nature of the rules. Despite playing against the wind it was the home side who gained the early initiative through Jim Coleman and it was ten minutes before the break when Lewis Barlow put Bridge back on level terms. The second half was always going to be an uphill struggle as the deteriorating ground conditions combined with the strong wind kept Bridge camped in their own half for long periods. They managed to survive until the hour mark when Coleman added his second and they went further behind to a fine individual goal by Michael Hewson. Joel Dixon then added a fourth before Steve Warburton reduced the arrears with ten minutes remaining. Any aspirations of a fight back were quickly dashed however when a mistake by Chris Wood allowed Coleman to complete his hat trick.
Man of Match - Tom Barker & Liam Bannard
18/01/09 - Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res 4-5 Claro Beagle - League
With their first team game again cancelled Manager Tom Ekin brought striker Ollie Uffindall into his squad only to find that the visitors had their own goal scoring machine in Paul Beesley and it was his overall contribution that paved the way for Beagle to take all three points. Jimmy Dawson gave his side the lead in the third minute with Ekin’s selection vindicated seven minutes later with an Uffindall equaliser. Beesley got in on the act in the 23rd minute and as the game ebbed and flowed Alex Benson beat James Harris with a stunning strike and two later Uffindall put Bridge in front. This was soon cancelled out by another Beesley strike and a seven goal bonanza was completed three minute before half time by Andy Davis. Within three minutes of the resumption another defensive lapse by Bridge allowed Jim Drew to increase Beagles lead and only two excellent saves from Josh Donnelly prevented the visitors getting into an unassailable position. Bridge were given fresh impetus when Benson finished with aplomb from a narrow angle and thereafter it was anybody’s game. Johnny Brear failed to convert two excellent opportunities but Beagles could also point to some good chances especially a header from Johnny Hewison who did a Darren Bent from six yards out.
Man of Match - Mark Burniston
22/02/09 - Claro Beagle 4-1 Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res - League
'Bridge took the lead through Craig Kitching in this Division 2 encounter but they were not able to sustain their opening burst and in the end it was Beagle who proved to be worthy winners.
01/03/09 - Black Swan Barwick 2-0 Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res - League
It was a similar story for Reserve Team Manager Tom Ekin who travelled to Barwick with only eleven players and seven of these were still in their teens. Against an experienced home side, however, they put up a spirited performance and it was only the introduction of David Morley that changed the pattern of the game. Daniel Connell had been a constant threat to the Bridge defence but they had managed to contain him until a sublime pass from Morley put him in the clear to beat Josh Donnelly. This was in the 70th minute and though Bridge had a couple of half chances their resolve was finally broken four minutes from time with a tremendous drive from Morley that gave Donnelly no chance.
Man of Match - Adam Ekin
08/03/09 - Leeds City Adelers 2-1 Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res - League
Bridge’s Sunday Reserve team side looks to be going the same way but they did make Adelers work hard for the points after going two-nil down. James Hopkins opened the scoring from for the home side a corner and Richard Howard consolidated their position with a penalty after Isaac Heywood had been brought down. Bridge battled back with a Chris Chapman goal on 79 minutes and James Potter secured the points for his side with two smart saves to deny Alex Benson and Ollie Uffindall.
Man of Match - Wayne Fisher
29/03/09 - Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res 1-5 Headingley Rovers - League
It is always going to be a difficult fixture when bottom meets top and Bridge did themselves no favours by gifting the visitors two early goals and from thereon in the outcome was never in doubt. Bridge battled hard against a formidable Headingley defence and the points were already secure when Chris Chapman headed home a Daz Ekin free kick in the 81st minute. On target for the visitors were Jamie McConnell with a hat trick and Steve Gowland with a brace.
Man of Match - Matty Scaife
12/04/09 - Headingley Rovers 4-1 Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res - League
In his first year Tom Ekin is certainly experiencing the travails of Management as once more he was let down by players failing to turn up or give backword leaving him to put younger brother Adam in goal and take 1st team Manager Rich Donohoe to make up his side. Not surprisingly they failed to seriously trouble the Divisional favourites who led through a brace each from Pete Drury and Steve Gowland. A late Bridge surge, however, saw Paul Diamond save a Paul Winder Scaife penalty before Johnny Brear scored a late consolation goal.
Man of Match - Ollie Bone
15/04/09 - Killinghall Nomads 2-3 Boroughbridge AFC Sun Res - League
The role of Team Manager has certainly proved to be a steep learning curve for Tom Ekin in his first year of Management as his reinforced side grabbed all three points in the last minute. They took the lead in the 25 minutes when they strung a series of passes together before the exciting Mark Burniston put in a superb cross and though Neil Outhwaite saved Johnny Brear’s initial header the ball rebounded off some part of Brear’s anatomy into the net. Killinghall bounced back in the second half from two set pieces in the 57th & 60th minutes which were converted by Mick Hewson and Callum Willey respectively. Bridge got themselves back on level terms, again from a set piece, when Nomads failed to deal with a Burniston corner leaving Paul Vincent to bundle the ball home. With time running out Ollie Uffindall found the opportunity for one last step over only to see his drive beat Outhwaite and rattle the post but fortune was on Bridge’s side as the ball ricocheted off a recovering defender into the net or was it Paul Scaife?
Man of Match - Johnny Brear
