Boroughbridge AFC 'A' Match Reports 09/10
January to May
23/01/10 - Pannal Sports Res 0-0 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
Regardless of having the better of the chances Bridge came up against a resolute home team and in the end had to be satisfied with a point. By and large they had control of the midfield with the pace of Ollie Bone and Liam Bannard a constant threat but they could not find a way past keeper Graham Summers and on the two occasions Paul Scaife and Bannard managed to beat him defenders Steve Jackson and Tom Carr came to his rescue with goal line clearances. Summers also dealt superbly with a Richard Donohoe header from a Bone corner and in the last minute Scaife clever back heel was denied by another goal line clearance. Stand in keeper Chris Chapman was rarely troubled by the home side and Chris Wood gave another solid performance at the heart of the Bridge defence.
Man of Match - Richard Donohoe & Chris Wood
30/01/10 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 1-4 Harlow Hill Res - League
Without a recognized keeper for the second week running Manager Chris Chapman was again forced to don the gloves and was beaten after two minutes when a Chris Story free kick was not cleared and first team striker Danny Marsh volleyed in the opener. Bridge reacted well to the setback and on seventeen minutes Paul Scaife bagged the equalizer but without a first team fixture Harlow had taken the opportunity to reinforce their ranks and they went back in front through Chris Silverwood twelve minutes before the break. Prospect of a home comeback were quickly dashed when Johnny Hewison added the third within five minutes of the resumption and despite Bridge creating a few opportunities Hewison had the last word when he added his second to give the visitors a comfortable victory.
Man of Match - Liam Bannard, Ollie Bone & Steve Warburton
06/02/10 - Dalton Athletic 2-2 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
After pulling back a half time two goal deficit Bridge would normally have been happy with a point but there was a lot of self recrimination amongst the players at the end for their slipshod start and profligacy. The game was only seven minutes old when Dan Binks was left unmarked to convert a Matt Till corner and he was on target from the penalty spot twenty minutes later after Richard Balderson had been brought down. Bridge were creating their own problems but managed to regroup and steady the ship to half time. After the break Bridge managed to assert some authority on the game but found the home side quite happy to absorb the pressure and when chances came their way leading goal scorers Paul Scaife and Jake Fletcher missed some golden opportunities. On 65 minutes the industrious Steve Warburton got the deserved breakthrough as he curled a beauty into Paul Foster’s top corner from the edge of the box and six minutes later Tom Hepworth hit a low hard shot from a corner through a ruck of players for the equalizer. As Bridge pushed for the winner Chris Chapman, back in his more familiar role, had a header cleared off the line by Gary Foster and the Bridge Manager missed his chance of glory by volleying the rebound into the trees.
Man of Match - Steve Warburton
13/02/10 - Kirkby Malzeard 2-2 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' (a.e.t.) - Alverton Trophy
Kirkby win 4-1 on penalties
Bridge were within four minutes of causing an Alverton Trophy upset as they took top of the table Kirkby to the wire only to fail in the penalty shoot out. Sam Allan, via a Kirkby leg, gave Bridge a ten minute lead only for the home side to equalize within two minutes as Wayne Fisher punched a corner into his own net. The rest of the game was pretty much level pegging as both sides sought the winner with the pick an exceptional second half save from Charlie Scatchard denying a superbly struck Chris Chapman free kick. Chapman then gave his side the upper hand in extra time with a goal ten minutes from the end but Bridge lacked the experience and savoir faire to see the game out and a determined home side grabbed the equalizer through Shane Hayden with four minutes to go. The penalty shoot out proved a disaster for Bridge with only Sam Allan hitting the target to leave Kirkby 4-1 winners and an away trip to Wetherby Athletic in the semi final.
Man of Match - Tom Hepworth
06/03/10 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 3-4 Wigton Moor - League
Three times Bridge fought back from being a goal down only to lose out in unlucky circumstances nine minutes from time to promotion chasing Wigton. Paul Scaife was off target as early as the second minute with a good chance but after that it was the visitors who looked the more threatening with the pace of Steve Trueman, Darryl Bedeau and Ebun Lennon a constant threat. Bridge managed to survive until the 21st minute when Hamilton Machado sliced open their defence allowing Lennon to slot home past Wayne Fisher. Bridge, though, had their own speed merchant in the shape of Ollie Bone and it was his run and cross to an incisive through ball from Richard Donohoe that set up Scaife for the equalizer. Both sides created further chances before Trueman put his side back in front on the stroke of half time. The second half followed a similar pattern with the home defence the more stretched but it was Wigton who conceded next just past the hour mark when Bone ran on to a long clearance to hit home a superb volley from 20 yards that gave Chris Grimes no chance. Bridge’s joy was short lived as Bedeau took advantage of a defensive error to put his side back in front only for Scaife to level matters up with a déjà vu Bone volley on 71 minutes. The winning goal on 80 minutes came following another burst from Trueman but this time Fisher blocked his effort and as the ball spiralled out of play Trueman hooked it back in to give an unmarked Bedeau the simplest of chances and deprive Bridge of a point their performance deserved.
Man of Match - Ollie Bone
13/03/10 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 2-1 Burley Trojans Res - League
Two second half goals from Paul Scaife were sufficient to give his side victory in this middle of the table clash. Neither side showed any real creativity in a tepid opening 45 minutes but six minutes after the break Scaife produced a little bit of magic as he jinked his way past two defenders before curling an exquisite shot into the top corner to give keeper Steve Fozzard no chance. With Tom Hepworth and Chris Wood resolute in defence it took the home side until the 81st minute to consolidate their position when Scaife latched onto an incisive through ball from Steve Warburton to slip past the advancing Fozzard. Within a couple of minutes, however, Wayne Fisher dropped a cross at the feet of Gerard Mazurke for an easy tap-in to give ‘Bridge a few anxious moments which they survived with no further traumas.
20/03/10 - Brafferton Rangers 1-2 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
Despite missing Player Manager Chris Chapman and leading goal scorer Paul Scaife through injury Bridge started the better of the two sides with the aerial threat of Joe Turner and the pace of Sam Allan causing the home defence all sorts of problems. Twice they combined with Turner providing two openings for his strike partner, the first of which was well saved by Rich Kirby and on the second occasion Brafferton were lucky to escape without punishment as Allan was dragged down when in the clear. Nevertheless their bright start was underlined by Turner on 26 minutes as he crafted his way through the Brafferton high defensive line, held off the chasing defender to finish with aplomb. Bridge looked well in control until a miscued clearance from Wayne Fisher left Ritchie Wass the simple task of hitting home the equalizer, against the run of play. into an empty net. With the industrious Steve Warburton supporting Turner and Allan, Bridge continued to create the better of the chances only to find they needed the lighting reactions of Fisher to keep the scores level as he tipped Chris Woods’ point blank, skewed clearance over the bar. After the break the home side increased their work rate cutting down the space in midfield and it was on 56 minutes that Bridge made the decisive breakthrough. Joe Turner had his effort well saved by Kirby following some good wide play from Sean Corbett but the ball ran loose to Liam Bannard who coolly placed his effort into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Turner and Rich Donohoe both came close to extending the lead but it was Fisher who had the last word as he turned a Luke Richardson drive round the post to ensure Bridge went home with the points.
Man of Match - Steve Warburton
03/04/10 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 8-0 Pannal Sports Res - League
Bridge put in one of their best performances of the season albeit against a weakened Pannal Sports outfit to give Chris Chapman his most convincing victory in his tenure as Manager. They got off to a great start with Steve Warburton opening their account in the 3rd minutes and Ollie Bone consolidated their position with a second twelve minutes later. The visitors were having difficulty containing Bridge’s attacking formation and keeper Paul Burke was left with no chance as Paul Scaife and Joe Turner grabbed one each in a three minute spell mid way through the half. Scaife made it a nap hand with his second two minutes before the break and second half goal from Warburton (49), Scaife (57) and a first for Iain Campbell on 68 minutes completed the rout. To Pannal’s credit they never stopped trying and only the alertness of Wayne Fisher prevented John Wilkinson and Richard Lamb getting on the scoresheet for the visitors.
Man of Match - Iain Campbell
08/04/10 - Kirkby Malzeard Res 3-1 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
Bridge gave a good account of themselves against promotion chasing Kirkby Malzeard but in the end it was the experienced Paul Abbott who was the difference between the two sides. The home side took a first half lead through Tim Maynard and it took two smart saves from Charlie Scatchard to keep ‘Bridge at bay before they got back on terms through Mark Burniston in the 51st minute. Abbott responded within a minute and his second twelve minutes later proved too much for the visitors.
Man of Match - Tom Hepworth
10/04/10 - Burley Trojans Res 3-1 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
Although they had Tom Hepworth, Iain Campbell and Richard Donohoe on second team duty this was a below par performance by ‘Bridge who never looked likely to recover from a Jonathan Clarkson goal in the 13th minute. Clarkson added his second on 35 minutes and Simon Walker completed the scoring for the home side on the hour mark. Paul Scaife’s consolation goal a minute from time could not mask a disappointing ‘Bridge display.
Man of Match - Jake Fletcher
17/04/10 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 2-9 Westbrook YMCA Res - League
A Shane Grace brace and a third from Elliott Walker in the opening 16minutes looked ominous for a weakened Bridge side but a battling performance and a brace from Joe Turner saw them reduce the deficit before half time. Eight minutes into the second period however Ben Snape made it four which was quickly followed by Grace completing his hat trick. Bridge continued to battle away but they were being outplayed and even though it did not influence the result the final score was exacerbated by some poor offside decisions. Walker added a second half brace to complete his hat trick and further goals from Ian Armstrong and James Douglas completed the rout.
Man of Match - Craig Kitching
24/04/10 - Wetherby Athletic 'A' 3-3 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
Bridge travelled to Wetherby for their last game of the season and with nothing to play for it was lucky dip time in terms of shirt numbers. This did not seem to be a good idea when the home side took an eight minute lead through Tony Walsh but by half time Bridge had turned it around with a brace from defender Chris Wood and a 35 yard thunderbolt from keeper/converted midfielder Wayne Fisher that left Graham Watson helpless. The new formation, now sensing victory, took on a more serious outlook in the second half which proved to be their downfall as Wetherby came back to grab a point with goals from Adam Richards and Matt Barnfather.
Man of Match - Chris Wood
