Boroughbridge AFC Veterans Match Reports 09/10
13/09/09 - Sherburn Veterans 0-6 Boroughbridge AFC Veterans - League
The newly formed 'Bridge Vets kicked off their inaugural game in style with a convincing victory. The visitors enjoyed the greater possession and it was no more than they deserved when Kelvin Bainbridge put them ahead after 14 minutes. They continued to dominate and with six County Cup winners in their side they had developed an unassailable lead by the interval with further goals from Rob Timmins, Jamie Smith and a Paul Stephenson brace. The half time did not do them any favours, however, as limbs began to stiffen but they managed to do enough to keep a clean sheet and set up Stephenson for his hat trick.
27/09/09 - Boroughbridge AFC Veterans 9-1 Thorpe - League
Despite having to scramble round for players at the last minute 'Bridge Vets put on a superb all round performance against visiting Thorpe to record their second victory. It was Thorpe 'keeper Graham Balfour who kept his side in the game early on but once Paul Kirbitson opened the scoring the floodgates opened with Paul Stephenson adding a brace, his second a 20 yards exocet, before the break. Stephenson completed his hat trick with a simple tap in and added his fourth with a delicate chip over the advancing 'keeper before Alan Ward headed home a consolation goal for the visitors. Stephenson then set up Kirbitson for his second made his personal mark five before Jamie Smith and the impressive Rob Timmins completed the tally.
08/11/09 - Boroughbridge AFC Veterans 8-0 Manstonians - League
In their inaugural season in the York Corinthians League 'Bridge Vets continued on their winning ways with a convincing victory over Leeds based side Manstonians. First half goals from Kelvin Bainbridge, a Paul Stephenson brace and Jamie Smith gave them a comfortable half time lead with the visitors denied their only real chance of the half by stand in 'keeper Dale Binns. In the second half 'Bridge sustained their momentum with Stephenson again on target with two cracking drives that gave the visiting 'keeper no chance as they nestled in the bottom corner. Jamie Smith added his second following an excellent team move and the game was rounded off with an own goal from the unfortunate Ian Cartwright.
22/11/09 - Boroughbridge AFC Veterans 7-1 York - League
'Bridge maintained their 100% record with a relatively easy victory over York based Corinthians. Paul Kirbitson, a rare Daz Ekin header, Ian Raynor, Steve Anderson, Jamie Smith and a couple of screamers from Paul Stephenson were the scorers. This Sunday they face their toughest test to date when they entertain Division One side Boston Spartans in the Cup - kick off 1.30pm.
13/12/09 - Boroughbridge AFC Veterans 3-0 Sherburn - League
'Bridge kept their 100% record intact with this hardworking rather than inspiring victory. Both sides tended to cancel each other out in the first half and from one of the few clear cut chances Paul Stephenson made no mistake from 12 yards out following a good move involving Kelvin Bainbridge and Daz Ekin. 'Bridge were more creative after the break with Stephenson adding his second with a powerful strike in the 57th minute whereas it was three minutes later that Dale Binns had to make to first save of the afternoon diving to his right to hold a Thompson shot. Bainbridge completed the scoring 15 minutes from time when his intended centre fluked its way into the net and thereafter Bridge should have added to their tally as Stephenson, Jamie Smith and Ian Raynor were all guilty of missing good goal scoring opportunities.
24/01/10 - Boroughbridge AFC Veterans 6-1 Ilkley - League
'Bridge Vets virtually assured themselves of the Second Division title with a 6-1 victory over their nearest rivals Ilkley. Jimmy Binks, Jamie Smith, Ian Chisholm and a Paul Stephenson hat trick were the 'Bridge scorers.
28/03/10 - Boroughbridge AFC Veterans 1-0 Bardsey - League Cup Final
'Bridge Vets completed a League and Cup double with this hard earned victory over Division One leaders Bardsey. 'Bridge took the lead through Steve Coghlin in the early part of the first half and only some excellent saves from the Bardsey 'keeper prevented Paul Stephenson and Ian Raynor adding to the tally. In the opening half Bardsey ‘star card’ Dean Windass was given little room for manoeuvre by Rob Timmins and Mark Chisholm at the heart of the ‘Bridge defence but he became more effective after the break when he dropped into midfield. The visitors hit the post and Hogg made one excellent save but as the game became more stretched it was 'Bridge who had the better of the chances and Stephenson should have added to his impressive season’s tally before the end. Nonetheless it was a happy Steve Kirby who picked up the winner’s trophy from Windass in 'Bridge’s inaugural season in the League.
11/04/10 - Manstonians 0-2 Boroughbridge AFC Veterans - League
'Bridge maintained their 100% record in an uninspiring contest exacerbated by the poor playing surface. They opened the scoring in the first half with ‘surprise surprise’ Paul Stephenson the provider and Daz Ekin the scorer. Stephenson and Jimmy Binks both missed excellent second half chances before Jimmy McHendry added the second in the last minute.
