Boroughbridge AFC Veterans Match Reports 13/14
06/04/14 - Boroughbridge AFC Veterans 1-0 Thorpe Veterans - Plate Final
An exciting advertisement for Vets football this was most certainly not, but 'Bridge got the job done against their lower ranked opponents in this Corinthians Plate Final to add another piece of silverware to their already full cabinet. The game started brightly enough with Andy Layton unlucky not to connect with a ball over the top in the fourth minute, but after Thorpe had enjoyed the best chance of the half in seeing a long range 14th minute effort deflected just wide the rest of the half was characterised by half chances which did little to trouble either 'keeper. The second half began much as the first had ended, albeit with Marcus Philpott doing some good work for 'Bridge on the right wing but struggling to find his crossing range into the box. Overall it was the hosts on top, but only marginally and Paul Stephenson's men were given a scare in the 68th minute as Steve Kirby was forced to head the ball off the line and over the bar to safety. From the best chance of the match at one end of the pitch, the opening goal followed soon afterwards at the opposite end, with a Philpott corner coming out to Kirby in space who was able to deliver an excellent cross for Lee Brook to head home. The goal failed to ignite the contest, but that mattered little to the hosts who were able to see the game out and lift the trophy.
