Boroughbridge AFC 'A' Match Reports 15/16
August to December
22/08/15 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 4-1 Harlow Hill Reserves - League
A sending off midway through the second half and two late goals helped 'Bridge secure the points against their more experienced opposition. After an opening twenty minutes of midfield confrontations and limited chances 'Bridge opened their account through Toby Hardaker who ran on to a defence splitting pass from Kai Campbell to slip the ball past the advancing Tom Bland. The visitors soon restored parity however as Will Havercroft pinched the ball in midfield and from his cross Phil Miles bundled the ball home only to concede before the break with Hardaker drilling the ball into the net from 25 yards from a weak Bland clearance. Harlow pushed hard for the equaliser after the break but solid performances from Stu Johnstone and Chris Chapman aligned to a confident display from 'keeper Ben Ryder kept them at bay and Mattie Whitehead's dismissal exacerbated their situation. This was made worse ten minutes from time when Bland advanced from his goal to head clear only for Wayne Fisher to pick his spot unerringly as he returned the ball from fully 40 yards past the despairing 'keeper and a minute from the end 16 year old Jim Johnstone who had come on as sub picked up a pass from Tom Ekin and rifled the ball into the top corner to secure an excellent three points.
Man of Match - Stuart Johnstone
29/08/15 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 1-7 Dalton Athletic - League
The consequence of backwords further up the line was much more extreme for 'Bridge's third sting who had to bring Veterans 'keeper Ian Cullen into the firing line as well as utilise some of last year's Under-16's side and paid the price against a stronger, experienced visiting side. The floodgates opened in the early minutes of the game and 'Bridge were unable to stem the tide as Dalton cracked home five in the opening half. Things did improve after the interval and an Aaron Weinhardt goal was little consolation as Dalton added two more for themselves. Scorers for the visitors were Duncan Padget (2), Rhys Collins-Bell (2), Michael Cobb, Rhys Kirby and sub Stewart McLaughlan.
Man of Match - Liam Bannard
05/09/15 - Pannal Sports 2-1 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
This was always going to be tough task for 'Bridge against last year's Premier Division side Pannal Sports but they were given a lift after only five minutes with a Toby Hardaker penalty together with the dismissal of Ollie Bassett for deliberate hand ball. Unfortunately it did not pan out that way as Tom Carr restored parity on 13 minutes and four minutes later Chris Lamb put the home side in front. Liam Bannard hit the post for 'Bridge early in the second half and there was some late pressure with chances to Sean Corbett and Chris Chapman but with the majority of the sides' first team outfits they are going to find it exacting week on week until they are able to achieve some consistency.
Man of Match - Luke Hassall
12/09/15 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 3-6 Bramham - League
A change of policy from youth to experience and the introduction of five newcomers to the squad did not change the outcome for 'Bridge as they were overcome by a strong Bramham side. New signing Richard Lamb bagged himself a brace as they came back from four one down to reduce the deficit to a single goal only for the visitors to grab themselves two more as the home side threw caution to the wind. Luke Hassall was the other scorer for 'Bridge with Zack Turner (4) and Matt Lombard (2) on target for the visitors.
Man of Match - Liam Bannard
19/09/15 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 5-0 Beckwithshaw Saints Reserves - League
'Bridge were able to welcome back Tom Hepworth for his first game of the season along with long-term injury absentee Mark Burniston and new signing Tom Cregan but it was not until the last ten minutes that the home side were able to put the game to bed. Joe Cleminson dragged a good chance wide in the early stages before 'Bridge went ahead on 13 minutes when a low James Hollingworth free kick was missed by everyone to leave Toby Hardaker to slip the ball past Adam Firth. Incisive build up play should have doubled the score when Liam Bannard and Hardaker set up Burniston only for a superb save from Firth to thwart the 'Bridge front man and after Hardaker was just off target Firth was in action again to tip over a Richard Lamb drive. Early in the second half Hardaker linked up with Burniston who cut outside his full back to drive home left footed into the bottom corner and ease the pressure. Substitutions brought a period of uncertainty for the home side as they looked to adjust and the visitors had a couple of efforts high and wide before Niki Westbury's chip was high with Firth stranded. As the game entered the last ten minutes Westbury volleyed home a Lewis Barlow cross, Kai Campbell opened his account for the Club with a well placed header and a ball in from Chris Chapman was nodded in by Hardaker completed a satisfactory even if flattering margin of victory.
Man of Match - Tom Cregan
03/10/15 - Hampsthwaite FC 5-3 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
'Bridge looked set for another victory with two goals in the opening five minutes only to concede three in the next eighteen minutes as Hampsthwaite went on to gain their first points of the season. From the first corner of the game Tom Hepworth poked in the opener on two minutes with Liam Bannard latching on to a Luke Hassall pass to make it two only to be caught out by a ball over the top converted by Jamie Metcalfe ten minutes later. A penalty conceded by Hassall for a foul on Andy Hall was converted by Connor Holroyd and a minute later he dispossessed Chris Chapman to give his side the lead. Jimmy Hollingworth brought the sides level with a stunning drive on the hour mark and despite a Man of Match performance from 'keeper Ben Ryder it was the home side who finished the stronger as Metcalfe added his second and Holroyd completed his hat-trick two minutes from time.
Man of Match - Ben Ryder
10/10/15 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 5-1 Thirsk Falcons Reserves - League
Three goals in a ten minute spell mid-way through the first half set up this victory for 'Bridge who have already completed six of their home fixtures before the middle of October. The pace of Toby Hardaker and the returning Tom Hussell was a source of problem for the Thirsk defence and 'keeper Liam Morrison pulled off two early saves to deny efforts from Hardaker and Ryan Lamb. The home side continued to have the better of things and took a deserved lead on 19 minutes with a superb ball from Craig Peacock picking out Tom Hepworth who in turn found Liam Bannard and the midfielder turned his marker to slide the ball across the diving Morrison. One soon became two as the Thirsk defence was caught out by a ball over the top and Hepworth rounded the 'keeper and on 28 minutes Hardaker finished of a superb team goal to put his side firmly in the box seat. 'Bridge continued to hold sway with Hardaker and Russell Robshaw both missing great opportunities before the Hepworth/Hussell combination along with Lewis Barlow set up Ryan Lamb for the fourth. Hardaker and Hepworth both tested Morrison at the start of the second half before Hardaker added his second and 'Bridge's fifth just past the hour mark. Chris Moores scored a consolation goal for the visitors shortly afterwards which was the signal for a more attacking response with a strong run and shot from Ryan Moore followed by a good effort from Mark Higgins bringing 'keeper Ben Ryder into action but there were no further scares as 'Bridge steadied the ship.
Man of Match - Craig Peacock
17/10/15 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 0-4 Hampsthwaite FC - League
Hampsthwaite would seem to be 'Bridge's nemeses at present as they have now failed to beat them in their last four outings and have conceded twenty two goals in the process. There was little to separate the two sides in the opening half which was to change within three minutes of the restart as Connor Holroyd sat Chris Chapman on his backside before beating Ben Ryder, and the same player made it two in the 56th minute. Manager Neil Greer changed the shape of his side but as 'Bridge pushed forward they were twice caught out on the break by Reece Robinson to add two more and give his side the double over 'Bridge and only their second league victory of the season with their other three points coming from a walk over against Kirk Deighton Rangers.
Man of Match - Russell Robshaw
24/10/15 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 1-7 Dalton Athletic - League
The personnel may have changed from their meeting earlier in the season but that was all as 'Bridge were dumped out of the Intermediate Cup in the opening round by an identical scoreline. The game did not start well for the home side conceding a penalty in the opening five minutes, converted by Cornel Ciobanu, and by the interval the tie was already home and hosed as Dalton had added three more. 'Bridge did pull one back after the break through Niki Westbury but Dalton were the more clinical of the two sides adding another three to their tally. Ciobanu, Chris James and Duncan Padgett all bagged a brace for the visitors with substitute Rhys adding the seventh. For the home side only Liam Bannard, Kai Campbell and Toby Hardaker remained from the previous outing with the Man of Match the only consolation for Campbell.
Man of Match - Kai Campbell
31/10/15 - Bramham 1-3 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League Cup
Even if their senior counterparts had come away with victories this would still have been the result of the day for 'Bridge who had been well beaten at their own patch by Bramham only a few weeks back and had three sixteen year olds in their line-up including Kieran Horner making his debut in goal. They got off to an excellent start when an Alex Coombes flick on dropped to Liam Bannard who calmly beat Mark Tasker from the edge of the box and they consolidated their position on 33 minutes with a stunning effort from Coombes after he had been picked out by a 30 yard Niki Westbury pass. It was not all one way however and Chris Chapman and Horner were solid at the back for the visitors but all the good work of the 1st half was undone five minutes into the resumption when Jake O'Donoghue reduced the deficit. It was backs to the wall time now for 'Bridge but with 15 minutes to go Toby Hardaker gave them some breathing space when he beat Tasker to a long Horner clearance to restore the two goal cushion.
Man of Match - Kieran Horner
14/11/15 - AFC Horsforth 5-2 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
On a quagmire of a pitch 'Bridge gave a good account of themselves on their trip to unbeaten Horsforth battling back from a two nil deficit to restore parity through Liam Bannard and Toby Hardaker only to then go and concede three in the last ten minutes. Chris Crellin and Mark Chester had given the home side the two goal advantage with the late goals coming from Liam Dixon, a Chris Chapman own goal and Crellin adding his second in the last minute.
21/11/15 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 5-1 Ripon Red Arrows - League
The convincing scoreline does no justice to Arrows who for the opening twenty minutes were the side in the ascendency and even after going three nil down at the break 'Bridge had a few dodgy moments to survive before David Pearson put the game to bed with a fine individual effort in the 79th minute. With Jamie Duncan and Liam Horton pulling the strings in midfield the visitors started strongly putting the home side under pressure and always looking dangerous from set play situations leaving 'Bridge's front pair of Tom Hepworth and Toby Hardaker feeding off scraps. It was the home side, however, who took the lead in the 24th minute when Greg Pickles won the ball in midfield before spraying it out to Liam Bannard and his cross was volleyed home by Hardaker giving Joe Redpath no chance. The game continued to ebb and flow until the 39th minute when Hepworth picked up a poor clearance, sidestepped his marker to fire into the bottom corner, and they consolidated their position just before the break with a move started by Ben Ryder linking Tom Hussell, Hepworth and Richard Lamb with the pin point cross headed home by the predatory Hardaker. Arrows switched 'keepers at the break with Chris Cullen taking over the mantle and although 'Bridge had their chances the same could be said for the opposition but they failed to capitalise on a number of goalmouth scrambles and free kicks before Pearson's mazy run and dribble just about sealed things. Three minutes later they did find the net through Peter Scott but it was all too late and Alex Coombes made it a nap hand with a rasping shot into the roof of the net after Bannard and Hardaker had set up the chance.
Man of Match - James Hollingworth
28/11/15 - Dalton Athletic 1-1 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
Following two seven one thrashings earlier in the season Dalton had become 'Bridge's bugaboo but adversity appears to bring the best of them and with five enforced changes from the previous week they more than equalled their hosts. 'Bridge certainly had the best of the early chances before Alex Coombes put them ahead with a delightful thirty five yard chip on 34 minutes from a Jimmy Hollingworth pass to beat 'keeper Chris Till. They had a couple more half chances up to the break and after the interval they played even better with Coombes, Matthew Coles and Tom Cregan all profligate with good opportunities. Ben Ryder showed his value with a top class save to deny Michael Cobb but could do nothing about a Dalton counter attack started down the right by James Padgett and his bye line cross resulted in some pin ball defending aggravated by a waterlogged penalty area before Aaron Bumby knocked in the equaliser.
Man of Match - Russell Robshaw
19/12/15 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 2-2 Knaresborough Academy - Hulme Cup
Knaresborough win 5-4 on penalties
'Bridge could count themselves a tad unlucky to concede an own goal in added time whereas the visitors could point to an incident in the early part of the second half when the ball appeared to hit the inside stanchion and bounce to safety which may have avoided the penalty shoot-out. The game itself was action packed with plenty of talking points and it was the home side who took a surprise lead on 11 minutes through a first time Phil Wix effort to a square ball from Alex Coombes. The visitors equalised in the 59th minute when Ben Ryder was unable to hold on to a cross shot only for the home side to regain the advantage 10 minutes from time with Wix again the beneficiary following good play from Sean Corbett, which was then cancelled out by the unfortunate Russell Robshaw own goal. Joe Brook saved the first penalty and with all the others converted it was Knaresborough who went through to the semi-final.
Man of Match - Toby Hardaker
23/01/16 - Pateley Bridge 3-4 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
'Bridge recovered from two goals down (Dan Brown and Craig Jarratt) to restore parity through Russ Robshaw and Toby Hardaker only to go behind again to a Matt Brayshaw effort. Chris Chapman again levelled matters for the visitors before Hardaker secured the points with a late winner.
13/02/16 - Burley Trojans 3-3 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
With only one game under their belts since the 28th November exacerbated by a change strip it was not surprising that it took 'Bridge some time to get into their stride and it was no more than Burley deserved when they went in front on 22 minutes from a Lee McGowan header to a Ben Garnham cross, which was doubled minutes later as McGowan capitalised on a Lee Dearden error. 'Bridge did finish the half much better with Liam Bannard and Connor Freeman both hitting the woodwork and Oli Caciagli screwing wide when well positioned. They continued to work hard for each other after the break and deservedly reduced the arrears on 61 minutes with a low Caciagli drive into the bottom corner of Chris Hargreaves' goal and Phil Wix brought them back on terms with a near post finish to a David Cummings cross. It got better on 79 minutes when Caciagli cut in from the left and looped the ball over Hargreaves to put 'Bridge in front but they were unable to hold on to their lead as McGowan completed his hat-trick from close range following a bout of head tennis.
Man of Match - Oli Caciagli
20/02/16 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 0-5 Rawdon Old Boys - League Cup
After losing their opening game of the season Rawdon have remained undefeated in the Harrogate League and they showed their pedigree with this comprehensive League Cup victory at Aldborough Road. They started confidently, quickly coming to grips with the tacky surface and opened the scoring through Darren Nicholls who was on hand to convert when Lee Dearden parried a Ben Whitfield shot into his path. Nicholls then added his second from a Phil Stanfield pass before provider turned scorer following good link up play with Oli Nightingale. 'Bridge, to their credit, showed a positive attitude and were unlucky not to reduce the deficit before the break as Jimmy Hollingworth rattled the bar and Richard Lamb brought a good save out of 'keeper Ryan Baum. The second half was a more balanced affair with the visitors always looking able to click into another gear if required and a brace from Chris Softly, even though one looked suspiciously offside, saw them home and hosed and through to the last eight of the League Cup competition.
Man of Match - David Millei
27/02/16 - Thirsk Falcons Reserves 1-4 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
Tactics were not too much of a problem for Manager Neil Greer as four of the home players were ex-'Bridge members and 'keeper Lee Dearden had only left the Club the previous day with his place going to 16 year old Kieron Horner. After a tetchy opening 'Bridge got the fillip of a tenth minute goal from Toby Hardaker who finished off a good interchange of passing by firing low into the corner of Dearden's goal. Despite the odd defensive mishap generally 'Bridge were having the better of the exchanges and doubled their advantage on 28 minutes when a long range low Russ Robshaw drive was parried by Dearden, but a poor defensoive clearance went back to Robshaw who cleverly lobbed the ball over the stranded 'keeper. Niki Westbury reduced the deficit ten minutes before the break with a well taken goal only for Chris Chapman to restore the two goal cushion in the early part of the second half when he headed home a Phil Wix corner. 'Bridge were solid all over the park in the second half and Hardaker delivered the coup de grace in the 71st minute latching on to a superb James Hollingworth through ball to finish with aplomb.
Man of Match - Russ Robshaw
12/03/16 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 6-0 Kirk Deighton Rangers Reserves - League
After thirty minutes of battling for the opening goal 'Bridge took the quick route of Steve Kirby to 'keeper Kieran Horner, long punt up field to Phil Wix, who squared the ball for Alex Coombes to pass in the opener and nine minutes later Coombes, returning from his short sabbatical, broke through the Deighton defence to coolly chip 'keeper Barry Galton. Although bottom of the pile Deighton displayed a feistiness to their game but were unable to deny 'Bridge who went further ahead five minutes after the break when a deserving hat-trick effort from Coombes rattled the upright to leave Russ Robshaw to slot the rebound. Ben Pye, on his home debut, rounded the 'keeper for his first for the Club, Liam Bannard added a fifth on 74 minutes after Galton spilled Connor Freeman's volley into his path and Pye took advantage of a poor clearance to complete the scoring five minutes from time.
Man of Match - Liam Bannard
19/03/16 - Beckwithshaw Saints Reserves 0-6 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
'Bridge were gifted their opening goal in the 10th minute when a Chris Chapman clearance was headed over his 'keeper by Sam Hedgecock to leave Phil Wix an easy finish and he added his second mid-way through the half latching on to a Russ Robshaw header to slot past the onrushing Ben Atkinson. Seven minutes before the break Atkinson dropped a cross from Steve Kirby, a mistake then compounded by his defender who put the ball into his own net when under pressure from Kai Campbell. Richard Lamb fired a 20 yard free kick into the top corner two minutes into the second half and Sean Corbett confirmed 'Bridge's domination as he surged by three defenders to add the fifth. 'Bridge reciprocated Shaw's earlier generosity as Kirby and Alex Coombes failed to convert consecutive penalties leaving Tom Ekin to make it six five minutes from time.
Man of Match - David Millei
26/03/16 - Bramham 2-0 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
'Bridge's aspirations of closing the gap on second placed Bramham took a backward step as they failed to handle the pressure or conditions. There was some good build-up play in the opening half with a Toby Hardaker one-on-one arguably their best opportunity whereas the home side played the conditions much better bringing a good save out of Kieran Horner and always looking a threat from corners and free kicks. Horner saved a penalty ten minutes into the second half which was negated when their Achilles heel gave Ian Prendergast a free header on the hour mark and twelve minutes later a 25-yard daisy cutter from James Rowley struck both posts with Adam Field reacting the quickest to knock home the loose ball. 'Bridge now face a further three away fixtures before returning to the home base with fixtures against three of the four likely promotion aspirants.
Man of Match - Dave Cummins & Kieran Horner
07/04/16 - Harlow Hill Reserves 1-5 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
A mixture of youth and experience thrown together with some inclement weather proved ideal ingredients for 'Bridge as they put in a dominant performance to overcome Harlow Hill. Liam Bannard cleared an Andy Ashton corner off the line but after this early scare 'Bridge were soon in control with Alex Coombes volleying home a Russ Robshaw header from a Richard Lamb corner and on 24 minutes Toby Hardaker got his name on the scoresheet heading home a Tom Hussell corner. It wasn't all one-way traffic, however, as Kieron Horner had to stretch his large frame to full capacity with an excellent save to deny Dan Cooper and preserved the two goal interval advantage as he palmed away a George Medd free kick. Greg Harrison stymied his side's chances of a comeback when he was sent off on the hour mark and 'Bridge increased their advantage fourteen minutes later through Hardaker who was on hand to tap home after Jack Ellis palmed a Lamb header into his path. A minute later a Medd free kick reduced the deficit but this did not last long as Jim Johnstone took a Kai Campbell pass in his stride to strike home the fourth and Coombes finished the job off with a cool finish to a poor Ellis clearance.
Man of Match - Jimmy Hollingworth
16/04/16 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 0-7 AFC Horsforth - League
For thirty minutes 'Bridge matched the Division One leaders with Phil Wix firing wide when through on goal, Josh Lowcock palming away a close range Russ Robshaw header and Kieran Horner similarly saving from Harry Leigh after Frederick Pessu worked his way into the area. On the half hour mark Pessu picked up a loose ball for the opener and from there to the half time whistle it all went horribly wrong for the home side as three more goals left Horsforth home and hosed. The 'Bridge 'keeper fumbled a Daniel Petty free kick leaving Leigh to tap over the line, minutes later he misjudged a long clearance which Petty capitalised on for number three and was allowed to add his second from a seemingly offside position just before the break. Petty got his hat-trick on 59 minutes, Leigh added his second and arguably the best was saved for last when a ball in from the left was picked up by Rick Parry who drifted by a couple of defenders before driving hard and low into the bottom corner.
Man of Match - Dave Cummings
23/04/16 - Boroughbridge AFC 'A' 1-3 Pannal Sports - League
Sean Corbett gave 'Bridge the fillip of an early lead which was cancelled out by an 18-yard drive from Chris Lamb. Steve Warburton and Phil Wix combined well for the latter to bring an excellent save out of Simon Gill but it was Pannal who enhanced their promotion push in the second half with goals from Tim Kitchen and Christian King.
Man of Match - Sean Corbett
29/04/16 - Kirk Deighton Rangers Reserves 1-1 Boroughbridge AFC 'A' - League
'Bridge finished their away games with a creditable draw on a wet miserable evening against an unusually strong Deighton Reserve home team. Luke Trower gave his side the lead on the half hour mark with Toby Hardaker tying matters up when he latched on to a through ball to round 'keeper Jack Abbott and tap home. Incessant rain made playing conditions very difficult and chances went awry at both ends with Steve Warburton, Sean Corbett and Hardaker the guilty parties for the visitors and even after gaining his side a penalty Hardaker was unable to find the target to secure the three points.
Man of Match - Toby Hardaker
