Boroughbridge AFC Reserves Match Reports 17/18
August to December
09/09/17 - Altofts Reserves 2-1 'Bridge Reserves - League
A late error of judgement by Mark Burniston gave the home side their first victory of the season and condemned 'Bridge to their fourth out of the first six matches. Wayne Fisher was the scorer for 'Bridge in the 50th minute with a series of fine saves from Mark Burniston gaining him the Player of the Match award.
Man of Match - Mark Burniston
16/09/17 - Wyke Wanderers Reserves 4-2 'Bridge Reserves - League
'Bridge were at a disadvantage before the game kicked off with manager Neil Greer scrambling round to get a side together and Wyke without a first team game able to utilise the services of prolific front man Matt Conway whose pace, movement and more importantly, brace of goals, proved the difference. Kai Green and Gary Lupton were the other Wyke scorers with Jack Holdsworth and Sean Dunbabbin responding for 'Bridge.
Man of Match - Steve Kirby
23/09/17 - 'Bridge Reserves 8-1 Howden Clough Reserves - League
After their disappointing result of last week 'Bridge responded in positive fashion with a resounding victory over Howden Clough. Fielding a mixture of youth and experience 'Bridge got off to an excellent start marching to a four goal advantage in the opening eighteen minutes. Jack Campbell got the action started with a ten minutes brace before a blunder by 'keeper Neil Fox allowed a Dave Cummings shot through his grasp and Andy Layton made it four finishing off some good build up play. Veteran 'keeper Paul Kirbitson was rarely troubled in the home goal and Campbell completed a first half hat-trick from the penalty spot after Jim Johnstone had been fouled on the stroke of half time. 'Bridge were playing with pace and confidence as Ben and Jim Johnstone combined to set up Steve Warburton for the sixth and on the hour mark Warburton added his second with Tom Hussell the provider this time, followed by some more exquisite play and a finish to match from Jim Johnstone on 68 minutes. The home side continued to dominate without adding anymore to their tally and it was a powerful drive from Raja Bilal Khan who gave the visitors some consolation for their long trip home fifteen minutes from time.
Man of Match - Jim Johnstone
30/09/17 - Whitkirk Wanderers Reserves 4-4 'Bridge Reserves - League
It looked like a repeat of last Saturday when 'Bridge stormed into an early three nil lead but the home team were made of much sterner stuff and came back strongly to share the points. Jack Holdsworth and Jack Campbell scored in the fourth and seventh minutes respectively to give 'Bridge the early advantage which was enhanced on 21 minutes with a third from Steve Warburton. Brad McKenzie pulled a goal back for the home side who were then in the ascendency when goals from Steve Cooper and Nat Welsh restored parity mid-way through the second half. A penalty award changed to a free kick on the edge of the area was a disappointment for the visitors but their mood quickly changed when veteran Steve Kirby struck the free kick past Mark Grayson in the home goal with 17 minutes to go. Whitkirk, however, would not lie down and showed their resilience with an equaliser from Chris Baldwin in the last few minutes.
Man of Match - Steve Kirby
07/10/17 - 'Bridge Reserves 9-1 Sherburn White Rose Reserves - League
After 44 minutes 'Bridge had a slender one goal advantage, a minute later both sides were reduced to ten men, in added time they added to their lead and in the last twenty minutes the visitors capitulated except for 'keeper Christian Irwin who was excellent on the day. The home side took the lead on six minutes from a Jack Campbell pass converted by Dave Burniston with Paul Moran restoring parity from the spot two minutes later after he had been brought down by Luke Fletcher. Burniston added his second from an Alex Coombes free kick which is how it stayed until the third minute of added time with a fine individual goal from Steve Warburton. On 54 minutes Irwin saved a Jack Campbell penalty which was one of many fine saves by the 'keeper but he was unable to stem the flow as 'Bridge dominated the last twenty minutes. Ben Johnstone added number four on 71 minutes, two minutes later it was Campbell with a delicate chip, Coombes drove home the next and Warburton knocked in his second with twelve minutes to go. 'Bridge weren't finished and Coombes and Warburton were both involved in the final two goals from Tom Hussell.
Man of Match - Steve Warburton
14/10/17 - 'Bridge Reserves 2-2 Otley Town Reserves - League
For long periods 'Bridge held sway against the league leaders with a two goal advantage only for the leaders to show their resolve and snatch a late equaliser. Both sides came into the fixture with some good recent form and following a cagey opening where both sides had bit chances 'Bridge took the lead on 26 minutes. Tom Hussell chased a Steve Warburton cross in the box where he was upended by Phil Terry leaving Jack Campbell to confidently stroke home the penalty. Adam Campbell outpaced the home defence as Otley tried to respond only to be thwarted by a point-blank Ollie Barton save leaving 'Bridge with a narrow half time lead which they doubled sixteen minutes into the second half. Luke Fletcher won the ball in midfield and an interchange of passes with Hussell and Dave Cummins was followed by a pin point cross from the latter which was superbly headed home by Fletcher. A double substitution on the hour mark by the visitors did the trick with sub Aaron Taylor reducing the deficit in the 67th minute to throw the game open again. Dan Smith and Campbell were both denied by Lewis Firth as 'Bridge tried to restore their cushion and Barton was again to the rescue of his defence but it was the visitors who maintained their momentum and on 90 minutes Scott Hardcastle came through a bundle of players to head home.
Man of Match - Steve Warburton
28/10/17 - 'Bridge Reserves 2-2 Horbury Town Reserves - League Trophy
After extra time - 'Bridge win 5-4 on penalties
Although playing a team in a division higher there was little to choose between these two sides in the opening forty-five minutes and chances were equally frugal. Jack Campbell probably had the best of these for 'Bridge which was quickly pounced on by the Horbury 'keeper with Louie Peters responding for the visitors as he ran through the 'Bridge defence, rounded 'keeper Adam O'Neill and then fired wide of an open goal. Within five minutes of the restart however 'Bridge took the lead through Campbell as he tapped home after the 'keeper could only parry Steve Warburton’s effort and on 68 minutes Andy Layton flicked the ball on to Warburton to find Jim Johnston who coolly stepped aside his marker to hit home the second. 'Bridge should have been home and hosed but they missed a couple of decent chances and got the red light on 76 minutes when a free kick on the edge of the box was brilliantly saved by O'Neill and cleared to safety from the onrushing Horbury forwards. The warning wasn't heeded and ten minutes from time Peters reacted the quicker to another exceptional save from O'Neill to a second Mark Atkinson free kick and knock home the rebound before four minutes later Atkinson ran through unchallenged to slide in the equaliser and take the game to a penalty shoot-out. After the compulsory five it was still all square and when O'Neill saved the sixth it was left to Johnstone to slot the winner into the bottom corner and send 'Bridge into the next round.
Man of Match - Steve Kirby
04/11/17 - Burley Trojans 5-2 'Bridge Reserves - County Trophy
Due to dressing room problems the game switched to Boroughbridge but it was the visitors who were the benefactors as an error strewn 'Bridge performance saw them exit the County Challenge Trophy at the second round stage. The game was only two minutes old when an Alex Coombes back pass was intercepted by Eddy Bryan who rounded Paul Kirbitson to put Burley ahead and two minutes after Dave Burniston was just off target Dan Henderson slipped a ball through an open home defence for Chris Holmes to finish with aplomb. A Burniston header to a Dave Cummings cross reduced the deficit on 20 minutes and just when they looked like they were back in the game Kirbitson misjudged a cross from Tom Higman to allow Bryan his second. 'Bridge were enjoying plenty of possession and territorial advantage only for it to get worse nine minutes into the second half when Simon Walker converted from the spot after he had been brought down. The gap was again cut to two when Jack Campbell converted his own penalty but Burley struck again ten minutes from time as Bryan was allowed to drift by defenders on the by-line to set up Walker with an open goal.
Man of Match - Luke Fletcher
11/11/17 - Kirk Deighton Rangers Reserves 0-0 'Bridge Reserves - League
'Bridge's short trip to league leaders Deighton was typical of a local derby with plenty of endeavour but both sides lacking that extra bit of quality to open up two resolute defences and this was reflected in the final score.
Man of Match - Luke Fletcher
18/11/17 - 'Bridge Reserves 3-3 Kirk Deighton Rangers Reserves - League
This oscillating encounter swung one way and then the other with the visitors showing their resolve fighting back, with ten men, from a two goal deficit to earn a share of the points. Deighton, unbeaten in the League since the 23rd September, took the game to 'Bridge from the start and were finding joy down the channels and Danny Gore fired wide when well placed, Simon Wright forced a good save from Kieran Horner and Gore bewilderingly tapped the ball back to the 'keeper with the goal at his mercy. 'Bridge, however, have also been in good league form of late and fought their way back into the game taking the lead on 32 minutes when a Steve Kirby free kick was spectacularly volleyed home by Jim Johnstone. The home side took the lead into the half time break only to throw it away in the 46th minute when a breakdown in communication at the centre of their defence allowed Gore to latch on to a long Joe Hudson clearance to equalise. 'Bridge regained the lead 10 minutes later though Matty Coles who converted a Dave Cummins cross and six minutes later a Steve Warburton header pushed onto the underside of the bar by Hudson was adjudged to have crossed the line much to the chagrin of the 'keeper who paid for his dissent with a second yellow card. Paradoxically this seemed to have more of an adverse effect on the home side and it was Deighton who struck next through a Jonathan Large effort from the edge of the box and five minutes from time Phil Turner stroked home the equaliser from close range. Coles and Warburton both had late efforts off target which was the nearest they came to testing the stand in 'keeper leaving the visitors to take a deserved share of the spoils.
Man of Match - Dave Burniston
25/11/17 - 'Bridge Reserves 4-1 Old Centralians Reserves - League
'Bridge continued their good run of form in the League and after an early scare from a Danny Walker effort they had the game home and hosed after 31 minutes with their front three playing a major part in the goals. On 12 minutes Jimmy Johnston jigged his way past two defenders and put in a superb cross which was met with a great finish by Jack Campbell, who added his second eight minutes later with a close range volley to a cross from Johnston headed down to him by Steve Warburton. A minute later Johnstone and Warburton combined for Campbell to complete his hat-trick with another clinical finish and just past the half hour mark 'keeper Matthew Lambert was unable to hold a rasping Campbell shot with Warburton on hand to knock home the fourth. 'Bridge continued to dominate the ball and the territorial advantage but the cohesion and acuity of their earlier play was negated by the improvement of the visitors and a subsequent goal drought until the 86th minute. Both sides had chances but generally play was lacklustre in the second period before Chris Sharkey fired in the consolation goal for the visitors. The Reserves have no fixture this weekend and then are at home to Hall Green United before a trip to Ripon City for a Hulme Cup tie on the 16th December.
Man of Match - Jack Campbell
