Boroughbridge AFC 'A' Match Reports 17/18
August to December
09/09/17 - 'Bridge 'A' 5-8 Pool AFC 'A' - League
This was a baptism of fire for new Manager Stephen Coles who had struggled all week to get a side together and then saw all his hard work dismantled by one player. It started well enough when Paul Scaife put his side in front on five minutes which was cancelled out by David Potts five minutes later only for Ben Voakes to give 'Bridge the lead on 12 minutes. Re-enter Potts who cut in from the right to fire powerfully into the roof of the net and then found the bottom corner to complete his hat-trick on 35 minutes. Voakes restored parity on 50 minutes only for Potts to respond with an avalanche of goals in the 52nd, 60th, 62nd, 64th and 75th minutes and put the game to bed. 'Bridge did give the score some respectability with late goals from Niki Westbury and Chris Wood but it was too little too late and plenty for Mr Coles to mull over.
Man of Match - Chris Wood & Niki Westbury
16/09/17 - 'Bridge 'A' 2-6 Bardsey Reserves - League
For 'Bridge 'A' it was déjà vu of a week ago with an early goal, a competitive first half then fading badly after the break and conceding a raft of goals. After testing 'keeper Justin Gilmore with a speculative effort straight from the kick off Niki Westbury opened the scoring with another long range effort in the third minute. Corey Gilmore got Bardsey back on track in the 15th minute and a Malachi Awe header gave them the lead six minutes later only for Westbury to restore parity in the 31st minute. This is how the game stayed until James Baggott put the visitors in front past the hour mark and as 'Bridge faded Bardsey took full advantage with three goals in the last ten minutes from James Hullock, Miciah Dore Williams and Gavan Duffy respectively.
Man of Match - Jacob Sharp
23/09/17 - 'Bridge 'A' 1-3 Bedale Reserves - League Cup
With the two sides polar opposites in the League it was not surprising that 'Bridge exited the League Challenge Cup in the preliminary stages. After going two nil down Niki Westbury missed a great opportunity to reduce the deficit when Jordan Aspinall saved his penalty before the half time break. Bedale went on to add to their lead before Ben Voakes pulled one back in the last ten minutes which, together with an improved overall performance, was some consolation for the defeat.
Man of Match - Matthew Coles
30/09/17 - Harlow Hill Reserves 2-3 'Bridge 'A' - League
With the Manager away, "dad" took over the reins on a temporary basis and brought home the points as 'Bridge beat Hill Reserves for their first points of the season. A close-range effort from Louis Wheatley gave the home side the lead on 11 minutes only for 'Bridge to respond within two minutes as Jacob Sharp won the ball on the right, passed inside to Niki Westbury and his incisive through ball was slotted home by Ben Voakes. On 29 minutes Westbury put his side ahead cutting in from the left to drive past Ross Hall which is how it stayed as Harlow ratted the bar just before the break. James Ekin came on for the injured Sean Corbett after the interval and made his presence felt converting a Westbury pass in the 61st minute to give 'Bridge a two goal cushion. Luke Middleton pulled a goal back twelve minutes from time and a flurry of corners put 'Bridge under some pressure in the closing stages but they survived thanks to some resolute defending and a fine save from Kieran Horner to a top corner bound shot five minutes from time.
Man of Match - Jacob Sharp
07/10/17 - 'Bridge 'A' 10-1 Kirkstall Crusaders - League
This fixture had a similar theme to the Reserve team game with a plethora of goals, a slight half time advantage followed by a second half collapse from Kirkstall which did not seem likely in the opening twenty minutes when the visitors had the better of the opportunities. Predictably, therefore, it was Crusaders who took the lead on 22 minutes with a left foot drive from Jason Prior only for 'Bridge to show their resolve. Within two minutes Matt Coles drove home the equaliser and four minutes later fired in the second following some deft footwork in the area. For the next thirty minutes or so the visitors continued to pass the ball about but the home side remained resilient and on 63 minutes Paul Scaife opened his account to give his side a two-goal cushion. Three minutes later Jacob Sharp got on the scoresheet with a tremendous 40-yard volley that dipped late to deceive 'keeper Scott Clayforth to precipitate a goal rush. Coles completed his hat-trick, Scaife added his second before Niki Westbury got in on the act with a hat-trick and four minutes from time Scaife scored his third to complete a hat-trick of hat-tricks.
Man of Match - Matthew Coles
14/10/17 - Pannal Sports Reserves 2-3 'Bridge 'A' - League
'Bridge made it three in a row with a hard fought victory against Pannal Sports Reserves on a difficult playing surface. They made a lively start with Niki Westbury firing over the best chance of the early stages before the home side got into their stride but again shots were high or wide of the mark. In the 28th minute Matt Coles gave his side the breakthrough when he slotted past the advancing Simon Gill after he had been put through one-on-one only to fire wide from a similar opportunity two minutes later. An injury to Westbury brought an early change for 'Bridge and some slack defending should have given the hosts an equaliser but they failed to capitalise on their chances. This could have proved pivotal on 52 minutes when James Ekin doubled the advantage only for 'Bridge to throw the initiative back into the Pannal court as Craig Nelson exploited more sloppy defending to bag a brace in the 55th and 56th minutes. It took 'Bridge a while to recover from these setbacks with a Shane Butlin header to a Richard Donohoe free kick hitting the post the nearest either side came to the winner and with the game deep in stoppage time a share of the spoils seemed fair and inevitable. Matt Coles had other ideas and when a defensive clearance came out to him in the 95th minute he let fly with a superb half volley that nestled into the roof of Gill's net but the drama was still not over as there was time for a free kick on the edge of the box which Nelson struck high over the bar.
Man of Match - Matthew Coles
21/10/17 - 'Bridge 'A' 6-0 Ripon City Reserves - League
Following last week's late winner Matt Coles started things off against old adversaries Ripon City by firing in the opener from 12 yards in the second minute. This did not deter the visitors, however, who enjoyed plenty of possession thereafter using John Doyle as their target man but without seriously threatening the home goal. Their best chance fell to Matty Cullen who headed wide under pressure with all their hard work undone on 37 minutes when 'Bridge added their second. Jim Johnstone skipped by his marker in midfield and threaded the ball through to Paul Scaife who held it up before laying a superb reverse pass into the path of Johnstone to finish with aplomb. Four minutes into the second half the same combination gave Johnstone his second and Scaife knocked the stuffing out of Ripon with the fourth on 55 minutes. James Ekin set up Johnston for a deserved hat trick on 66 minutes and Ben Voakes was only on the field for a couple of minutes when he took advantage of a defensive error to slide the ball past Jim Newcombe and complete the scoring.
Man of Match - Jim Johnstone
28/10/17 - 'Bridge 'A' 1-3 Bedale Reserves - Intermediate Cup
An understrength home side exited the Intermediate Cup in the first round but to their credit they made League leaders Bedale fight hard for their victory. After going behind to a goal in the opening few minutes it got worse for 'Bridge when a Jordan Aspinall clearance deceived everyone to leave Ryan Emmerson a clear run on goal for the second. Matty Coles pulled one back for 'Bridge six minutes before the break but their chance of a fightback dissipated in the opening minutes of the second half with a Bedale penalty.
Man of Match - Chris Wood
04/11/17 - 'Bridge 'A' 2-4 Ventus Yeadon Celtic - League
Five years ago the visitors were playing Boroughbridge first team in the County Challenge Cup and though now going through a transitional period they still proved too strong for 'Bridge's 'A' side. The home side started well and went ahead on sixteen minutes through James Ekin who latched on to a Matt Coles pass to stroke the ball past Kiel Townsend. The lead only lasted six minutes, however, as some shaky defending allowed Terry Hargreaves to restore parity and further pressure gave them the lead on the half hour mark with Hargreaves again the scorer. It was a positive response from the home team only to be caught out by a long ball over the top of the defence to leave Tony Hannan to slip home the third five minutes before the break. As the pitch deteriorated the second half became a dogged affair with 'Bridge giving themselves hope twelve minutes from time when Steve Coles crossed for Sean Corbett to convert but as they pushed for the equaliser they were left exposed and Michael Howe slipped the ball past Michael Farrell in a one-on-one situation to secure the points for the visitors.
Man of Match - James Ekin
11/11/17 - Kirkstall Crusaders 4-2 'Bridge 'A' - League
Stephen Coles is having to learn management the hard way as a series of backwords left him with a depleted squad and even though he managed to scramble 14 players together by the time they reached Kirkstall this was down to eleven with one maybe which was reflected in a half time score of four nil to the home side. A Danny Highfield brace and a goal each from Adam Morris and Jason Prior had put Kirkstall in control but an improved second half saw 'Bridge reduce the arrears through Coles and Jamie Dunn.
02/12/17 - 'Bridge 'A' 1-0 Beckwithshaw Saints Reserves - League
As the final score indicates there was little to choose between the two sides but the tight finish was down to the profligacy of both teams rather than the frugality of their defences. Eddie Milstead had a couple of "sighters" for the visitors before testing Kieran Horner with another effort and Dane Chalmers rattled the woodwork but it was not all one way traffic and, with Richard Donohoe pulling the strings for 'Bridge, James Ekin, Paul Scaife and Sean Corbett were all guilty of missing good opportunities. Like the first half, 'Shaw started the better after the break only for two excellent saves by Horner together with some resolute defending keeping them at bay. 'Bridge also missed a couple of chances before they got the breakthrough on 77 minutes when Sean Corbett latched on to a through ball from Jamie Dunn to coolly slip by the 'keeper. As the visitors pressed for the equaliser they left themselves vulnerable at the back and twice Scaife was denied by the 'keeper when in the clear and on the third occasion he saw his effort cleared off the line. 'Bridge had some narrow squeaks near the end but they hung on bravely for the three points and arguably their best performance of the season.
Man of Match - Kieran Horner
